Medicine and drugs classification for the Central Hospital of Asturias

Introduction

The database simulates the new computer system to dispense drugs in the HUCA (Central Hospital of Asturias). The main feature is that it finds which pharmaceutical specialties are available to prescribe and what is the cheapest for the hospital to buy.

Model

The model is a classification of drugs based on the anatomical functional area they affect, which are encompassed by the ATC.

  • In each area there are multiple mechanisms of action.

    • The different functional areas have an associated code.

  • For each specific mechanism we get different types of active ingredients.

Esquema Principal
Figure 1. Primary Schema
  • An active ingredient has multiple presentations and pharmaceutical products (medicines)

  • For each posology (presentation) there are different pharmaceutical specialties

    • Each posology includes a code, name and price.

Use cases

This system has many use cases, for example:

  • Find all the different anatomic-functional areas

  • What are the active ingredients of the mechanism of action 'Antithrombotic'?

  • Find every posology for each active ingredient

  • What are the pharmaceutical specialties for the posology 'Famotidine 10 mg'?

Or more complex ones such as:

  • What is the least expensive medicine for each mechanism of action?

  • Find every medicine for the mechanism of action 'Anti ulcer' but excluding those with the active ingredient 'Famotidine'

Find all the different anatomic-functional areas

MATCH (n:AnatomicFunctionalArea)
RETURN n.name AS `Name`, n.code AS `Code`

What are the active ingredients of the mechanism of action 'Antithrombotic'?

MATCH (n:MechanismOfAction)-->(i:ActiveIngredient)
WHERE n.name='Antithrombotic:Heparin and derivatives'
RETURN i.name AS `Name`

Find every posology for each active ingredient

MATCH (n:ActiveIngredient)-->(i:Posology)
RETURN n.name AS `Active Ingredient`, collect(i.name) AS `Posology`
ORDER BY n.name ASC

What are the pharmaceutical specialties for the posology 'Famotidine 10 mg'?

MATCH (n:Posology)-->(i:PharmaceuticalSpeciality)
WHERE n.name='Famotidine 10 mg'
RETURN i.name AS `Name`, i.price AS `Price`, i.code AS `Code`

What is the least expensive medicine for each mechanism of action?

The hospital is interested in finding out what pharmaceutical specialityies to buy in order to save money.

MATCH (n:MechanismOfAction)-[*]->(i:PharmaceuticalSpeciality)
WITH n, min(i.price) AS Price
MATCH (n)-[*]->(i:PharmaceuticalSpeciality)
WHERE i.price = Price
RETURN n.name AS `Mechanism of action`, i.name AS `Medicine`, Price
ORDER BY n.name ASC

Find every medicine for the mechanism of action 'Anti ulcer' but excluding those with the active ingredient 'Famotidine'

This query would be useful in case of needing medicine for someone with an allergy to an active ingredient.

MATCH (n:MechanismOfAction)-->(a:ActiveIngredient)-[*]->(i:PharmaceuticalSpeciality)
WHERE a.name <> 'Famotidine'
AND n.name = 'Anti ulcer:H2 receptor antagonists'
RETURN i.name AS `Medicine`, i.price AS Price
ORDER BY Price ASC
